Cross-Sector Hub event to help advance Scotland’s clinical trial aims

Tayside will be the backdrop for the next Scotland Academy of Medical Sciences Cross-Sector Hub event later this week

Focussing on ‘Advancing Clinical Trials in Scotland’, it will take place at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School at The University of Dundee on Thursday 20 August.

The event comes at a time of investment and growth in clinical trials across Scotland and will showcase its four Commercial Research Delivery Centres (CRDCs), Practice Embedded Research Units (PERUs), Decentralised Clinical Trials initiatives, Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product Trials and Data Assisted Trials.

Underpinned by the Cross-Sector Hub aims of enhancing interaction and collaboration, the event will welcome professionals from different sectors and disciplines to unite, connect, and consider how to best harness knowledge and experience to further advance clinical trials in Scotland.

Speakers and contributors include Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Chief Scientist for Health; and Professor Rory McCrimmon, Professor of Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism, and Vice-Principal (Health) at University of Dundee.

Also addressing attendees will be Chloë Cowan, operational lead for Research & Innovation at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Deputy Director of the CRDC UK Network; and Professor Isla Mackenzie, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Honorary Consultant Physician at the University of Dundee and Ninewells Hospital.

Further strengthening the speaker programme are Andrew Deans, Lead Research Nurse for NHS Research Scotland’s Primary Care Network and NHS Lothian; Dr Jacqueline Barry, Chief Clinical Officer at the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult; and Kathy Harrison, Programme Lead at DataLoch; as well as key regional RD&I Directors who oversee Scotland’s CRDCs.

Attendees will benefit from:

  • Strategic networking opportunities to connect with leaders in life sciences research and innovation
  • A platform to identify and engage with potential collaborators from diverse professional backgrounds
  • In-depth insights into clinical trials in Scotland
  • A collaborative, inclusive environment to drive innovative solutions and cross-sector working

Individuals at any stage of their career are welcome, with those in the early-mid stages of their careers likely to find the event particularly useful.

Limited places are available. However, an active wait list is in operation, and organisers will be in touch if a place becomes available.

Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, who is Chair of the Scotland Hub Project Team, said: “Our fourth Hub event will shine a light on clinical trials and their strategic importance to Scotland and the population. It is extremely timely with numerous exciting developments across the sector and will provide the opportunity to deepen connections across NHS, industry, and academia that are vital for future advancement.

“Our work with the Academy of Medical Sciences continues to flourish and we encourage researchers, innovators and other stakeholders with an interest in advancing health to attend, offer new perspectives, and join our push for progress.”
