Improving public involvement in research

It is one year (11 March) since the launch of the Shared Commitment to improve public involvement in health and social care research, and an opportunity to shine a spotlight on activity over the last year.
Excellent public involvement is an essential part of health and social care research and improves the quality and impact of research. It refers to all the ways in which the research community works together with people including, patients, carers, advocates, service users, and members of the community.
Over the last year NHS Research Scotland, alongside the Chief Scientist Office, have worked in partnership across the research community in Scotland, and with other leading organisations to help drive up standards and raise the profile, value, and importance of public involvement in health and social care research.
As we mark this first milestone, we reflect on activity over the last year which has focussed supporting patient and public involvement (PPI) activities across our specialty areas and working to address equality, diversity and inclusion in patient and public involvement activities.
- A series of events hosted by our NRS Cardiovascular network to hear first-hand views from cardiovascular patients in Scotland how they want to be involved research
- ENRICH Scotland established the ‘RICH (Research In Care Homes) Voices’ patient and public involvement group encouraging the voices of care homes to speak louder in research
- Funding was provided to launch patient and public involvement projects in oral and dental health
- Partners in Research was established by our NRS Neuroprogressive and Dementia Network with significant work including writing a book, development of a co-production strategy and support to researchers developing research proposals
- Developments within Chief Scientist Office are encouraging and supporting researchers to work with PPI partners
- A new patient and public involvement strategy with our NRS Mental Health network has been developed
- Overcoming challenge in patient and public involvement in critical care
- Our NRS Oral and Dental network have worked with colleagues to support sustainable PPI in Co-designing Dundee Dental Hospital and Research School (DDH&RS)
Thank you to all our partners, leads, research teams and people from across Scotland who have been involved in PPI activities. This is an evolving area and there is more work to do to support PPI across our networks and champion the voices of patients and the public. We will continue to work with our partners locally and nationally to deliver high quality public involvement in research.
