Recognising exceptional contribution to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)

Recognising exceptional contribution to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)

26th February 2024

Scotland’s research community is being encouraged to submit nominations for two awards recognising individuals who have had a positive impact on patient and public involvement (PPI) in Scotland

Excellent public involvement is an essential part of health and social care research and has been shown to improve its quality and impact. It extends to all the ways in which the research community works together with people including patients, carers, advocates, service users, and members of the community.

The PPI Newcomer Award is for researchers, public partners, or PPI leads at the start of their PPI journey. It recognises that taking the first steps into PPI can be daunting but the start of a productive journey between researchers and public contributors.

The PPI Impact award is for researchers, public partners, or PPI Leads who have demonstrated ongoing commitment to PPI. It recognises that supporting, delivering and sustaining PPI requires dedication but can deliver significant benefit and impact.

To be eligible, projects must have been either active or completed in 2022-24.

To nominate, please submit a 500-word (max) summary to communications@nrs.org.uk by 5pm on Tuesday 5 March. This should include:

  • The nomination category – Newcomer or Impact
  • A description or examples of how the UK Standards for Public Involvement informed the way the public involvement was planned and managed
  • Who was involved/who collaborated
  • A description of the progress and achievements
  • Evidence of the impact and difference made by the nominee

The awards will be presented during the Patient and Public Involvement Event at the V&A Museum on 12 March 2024.

Hosted by NHS Research Scotland and the Chief Scientist Office of Scottish Government the event will hear from over 50 speakers including public contributors and early career researchers – all united in ambitions to improve the quality of PPI in research. Topics range from the use of PPI in pre-clinical research, in data science and in caregiving; through to support for PPI, rewards and finances, impact and evaluation and positive examples of working with children and young people, underserved groups or those with additional needs.
