Celebrating clinical research

Celebrating clinical research

20th May 2022

Over 43,000 participants across Scotland took part in vital clinical research trials in 2021-22.

The figures are announced on International Clinical Trials Day (20 May) – a day dedicated to celebrating clinical research around the world. It acknowledges the first randomised clinical trial conducted in May 1747 by Scottish physician James Lind.

More than 275 years later, clinical research is a cornerstone of person-centred healthcare across Scotland, and is made possible thanks to the support and commitment of patients and the public working in partnership with researchers and healthcare professionals.

We need only look back on the last two years to see the vital role research has played and continues to play in our COVID-19 response. Restoring Scotland’s diverse portfolio of research across all research phases, treatment types, and conditions will support NHS recovery and drive a modern, innovative health and care system – but it requires volunteers.

International Clinical Trials Day is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on ways to get involved.

Thank you to all those involved in setting up, delivering and participating in research. Your efforts are not only recognised today on International Clinical Trials Day, but every day for the work you do in advancing healthcare.
