Practice Embedded Research Units (PERUs)

As more clinical trials are looking to include diverse patient populations and deliver research closer to where patients live, there is currently a drive to develop a national primary care research infrastructure across Scotland.

A pioneering GP practice in Midlothian recently opened its own dedicated clinical research facility: a PERU with support from NHS Lothian Clinical Research Nurses. The practice GP, Drummond Begg, and Miranda Odam, the NHS Lothian Senior Nurse manager, presented their recommendations for establishing a PERU at an event on the 30th March 2026.

The session was recorded and can be viewed, along with copies of the presentations.
