Stroke

Scotland is well established in undertaking world-leading research studies in the prevention and treatment of Stroke. The incidence rate for cerebrovascular disease decreased over the last decade by 8%. Incidence rates were consistently 24% higher in males than females. 

A broad range of research studies are conducted within the NHS including:

  • Cerebrovascular disease including acute treatment, prevention and rehabilitation causes of strokes and medical interventions to prevent secondary strokes
  • Prevention of cognitive decline and research into the different types of strokes
  • Use of devices to help increase blood flow, removes clots, stimulate nerves and rehabilitation tools
  • Rehabilitation and ongoing care for patients

The NRS Stroke Network provides support to improve the quality and quantity of health research in this area and ensures the appropriate research infrastructure and expertise is in place to allow effective delivery of research programmes tailored to the needs of the people of Scotland. The national co-ordinating centre is based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary led by Professor William Whiteley.
