Our Shared commitment to Public Involvement in Health and Social care Research

11th March 2024

Today (11 March) we are celebrating the second anniversary of the launch of our Shared Commitment to Public Involvement in health and social care research.

Excellent public involvement is an essential part of health and social care research and has been shown to improve its quality and impact. It extends to all the ways in which the research community works together with people including patients, carers, advocates, service users, and members of the community.

Working in partnership with other leading organisations, including The Health Research Authority (HRA), Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS), The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and partner nations, the Shared Commitment is helping to drive up standards in health and social care research.

In recognition of the two-year milestone, NHS Research Scotland and the Chief Scientist Office of Scottish Government will host a Patient and Public Involvement Event on 12 March.

A diverse programme will showcase use of use of PPI in pre-clinical research, in data science and in ageing research; through to support for PPI, rewards and finances, impact and evaluation. It will also share positive work with children and young people, underserved groups, and those with additional needs.

The programme has been shaped by an impressive range of abstracts submitted from across Scotland and will bring together over 50 speakers, including public contributors and early career researchers – all united in ambitions to improve the quality of PPI in research.

Scotland’s research community has also been encouraged to submit nominations for two awards - PPI Newcomer Award and PPI Impact Awards - recognising individuals who have had a positive impact on patient and public involvement (PPI) in Scotland.

The Shared Commitment to Public Involvement in Health and Social Care Research is administered by the Health Research Authority (HRA) on behalf of all the partner organisations. In support new Learning and Sharing meetings have been launched which will help promote, support, and amplify excellent public involvement in health and social care research. By sharing experiences across the diverse range of organisations supporting the shared commitment it is hoped we can reduce duplication, maximise resources, and encourage further partnership working, ensuring we optimise our efforts and impact.
